Medigap Plan G — the most popular Medicare Supplement.
Plan G is the most comprehensive Medigap plan available to people who became Medicare-eligible after January 1, 2020. It covers everything Original Medicare doesn't except for the Part B deductible ($259 in 2026). Premiums typically range from $130-$220/month depending on your age, gender, ZIP, and tobacco use.
What Plan G covers
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (up to 365 additional days after Medicare coverage ends)
- Part B coinsurance or copayment (the standard 20%)
- Part B excess charges (where applicable — only matters in 41 states)
- Skilled nursing facility (SNF) coinsurance (days 21-100)
- Part A hospice care coinsurance and copayment
- Blood (first 3 pints)
- First $250 of foreign travel emergency (after $250 deductible, 80% to $50K lifetime max)
What Plan G doesn't cover
- Part B deductible ($259 in 2026, paid out of pocket)
- Prescription drugs (need separate Part D plan)
- Routine dental, vision, hearing (need separate plans or Original Medicare alternative)
- Long-term care
Plan G pros + cons
Pros
Most predictable monthly costs after Part B deductible. No network — any Medicare-accepting provider works. Covers nearly all Original Medicare gaps. Standardized benefits across all carriers — only price varies.
Cons
Higher monthly premium than Plan N or High Deductible Plan G. You still pay the $259 Part B deductible out of pocket each year. Doesn't include drug coverage — need separate Part D ($15-$70/mo).
Who Plan G is best for
People who want predictable costs, frequent or high-cost healthcare needs, total provider freedom, and who plan to keep Medicare for life. Especially good for people with multiple specialists or expensive specialty care.
Typical premium
$130-$220/month for a 65-year-old non-smoker (varies by state, gender, ZIP). Premiums vary significantly by carrier — same Plan G benefits, very different prices. Standardized benefits mean shopping by price is straightforward.
Estimated annual cost
Premium ($1,800-$2,640) + Part B deductible ($259) = ~$2,000-$3,000/year. Plus Part D plan and copays.
