Medigap Plan F — legacy comprehensive coverage.

Plan F was the most popular Medigap plan for decades because it covered everything Original Medicare doesn't — including the Part B deductible. As of January 1, 2020, Plan F is no longer available to new Medicare enrollees. If you became Medicare-eligible before 2020, you can still enroll in Plan F. Existing Plan F enrollees can keep their plans indefinitely.

Plan F pros + cons

Pros

Most comprehensive Medigap plan — covers everything Original Medicare doesn't (except drugs, dental, vision, hearing). Zero Medicare cost-sharing — once you pay your premium, all Medicare-covered services are $0 out of pocket.

Cons

Not available to new enrollees (became Medicare-eligible Jan 1, 2020 or later). Premiums are typically the highest of any Medigap plan because the risk pool is closing — older, sicker enrollees who can't switch easily. High Deductible Plan F (HD-F) is a similar legacy option with the high deductible structure.

Who Plan F is best for

People who became Medicare-eligible before January 2020 who want zero out-of-pocket costs. If your Plan F premium gets too expensive, you may be able to switch to Plan G in many states (which covers everything except the $259/year Part B deductible).

Typical premium

$200-$350/month for legacy Plan F enrollees (often increasing year-over-year as the closed pool ages). Premiums vary significantly by carrier — same Plan F benefits, very different prices. Standardized benefits mean shopping by price is straightforward.

Estimated annual cost

Premium ($2,400-$4,200) = total annual Medicare cost. No deductibles, no copays. Plus Part D plan.
