Subsidies

What subsidies are available to Texans?

The Advance Premium Tax Credit (APTC) lowers your monthly Marketplace premium based on household income and size.

Texas uses the federal Marketplace, so every federal subsidy rule applies. Because Texas has not expanded Medicaid, the subsidy schedule matters even more — for many Texas households it's the primary path to affordable coverage.

  • 100%–150% FPL: Most applicants qualify for Silver plans with near-$0 premiums after APTC, plus strong cost-sharing reductions that lower deductibles and copays.
  • 150%–400% FPL: Tiered premium tax credits cap monthly premium as a percentage of income. Many middle-income Texans land a Silver plan well under $150/mo.
  • Above 400% FPL: Under current enhanced-subsidy rules, premiums are capped at 8.5% of household income. This is meaningful for self-employed Texans, gig workers, and early retirees.

Estimates are preliminary until your application is filed with the Marketplace. We run your exact household numbers before you commit.

Plan options

Top ACA carriers in Texas

Availability varies by county. Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, and Travis generally have the widest selection; rural counties may have only one or two carriers.

Ambetter from Superior HealthPlan

Among the most widely available Texas Marketplace carriers and frequently priced as the benchmark Silver plan in many counties. HMO networks with value-add rewards programs.

BlueCross BlueShield of Texas

The state's legacy Blue carrier. Broad HMO networks in major metros, with strong relationships across Baylor Scott & White, Methodist, Memorial Hermann, and Texas Health Resources.

Molina & Oscar

Molina focuses on low-premium Silver plans for subsidy-eligible members, particularly in urban Texas counties. Oscar offers tech-forward HMOs with virtual primary care in Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio.

Aetna CVS Health & UnitedHealthcare

Aetna pairs medical coverage with MinuteClinic and CVS pharmacy integration. UnitedHealthcare has been expanding back into Texas Marketplace counties with a mix of HMO and EPO plans.

Rural Texas

Plan choices in rural Texas counties

Many rural counties in West Texas, the Panhandle, and East Texas have a narrow slate of carriers.

Texas has the largest rural population of any state, and Marketplace plan availability reflects that geography. In parts of the state, only one or two on-exchange carriers participate, and provider networks may be narrower than in the metros.

  • Network depth matters most: We check whether your primary-care doctor, specialist, and nearest hospital are in-network before recommending a plan.
  • Referral requirements: Many rural HMOs require a PCP referral for specialist care. We walk through how that works for your situation.
  • Telehealth coverage: For ranch country and underserved counties, we flag which carriers offer $0 telehealth and expanded virtual specialty care.
  • Off-exchange options: If on-exchange choices are limited and you don't qualify for a subsidy, off-exchange plans or an employer SHOP option may be worth comparing.
Timing

  • Enroll between December 16 and January 15 for coverage effective February 1, 2026.
  • Special Enrollment Period: Qualifying events include loss of job-based coverage, marriage, divorce, birth or adoption, a permanent move into Texas or to a new Texas ZIP, or a significant income change. Most SEPs run 60 days from the qualifying event.

Common questions

Texas ACA FAQ

Does Texas have its own state Marketplace?
No. Texas uses the federal HealthCare.gov Marketplace. There is no Texas-specific exchange website. A licensed SilverEdge advisor can quote and enroll on the federal Marketplace on your behalf.
Will my Texas doctor or hospital be in-network?
We check your specific doctors and hospitals against each plan's network before enrollment. This matters in Texas, where HCA, Baylor Scott & White, Memorial Hermann, Methodist, and Texas Health Resources each have different carrier relationships by region.
I'm a self-employed Texan — do I qualify for subsidies?
Often, yes. Subsidies are based on household Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI), which for self-employed filers is after business expenses. We help you estimate MAGI realistically so your subsidy doesn't get clawed back at tax time.
What does SilverEdge cost?
Nothing. Carriers pay us a commission when you enroll. We earn the same regardless of which carrier you pick — our job is to find your best fit.
