Medicare Advantage disenrollment — when (and how) you can switch back
If you're stuck in a Medicare Advantage plan that isn't working out, you have specific windows to switch back to Original Medicare or change plans. Outside those windows, you're locked in. Here's the complete disenrollment calendar.
Key takeaways
- Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): Oct 15 – Dec 7 — anyone can disenroll from MA and return to Original Medicare.
- Medicare Advantage OEP: Jan 1 – Mar 31 — one chance per year for current MA members to switch.
- 5-star SEP: Once a year, you can switch to a 5-star plan in your area.
- Medigap medical underwriting applies if you switch to Original Medicare — you may not get Medigap coverage.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) — Oct 15 to Dec 7
AEP is the main disenrollment window. During AEP, you can:
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (Part A + Part B)
- Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
- Add or change a standalone Part D drug plan
- Drop your Part D plan if returning to Original Medicare without drug coverage
Changes made during AEP take effect January 1 of the following year.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (MA OEP) — Jan 1 to Mar 31
If you're already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan as of January 1, you get one chance during MA OEP to:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
- Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare (and optionally enroll in a standalone Part D plan)
Limitations: You can only make ONE change during MA OEP. You can't use it to switch from Original Medicare TO a Medicare Advantage plan — only out of MA or between MA plans.
5-Star Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Medicare rates Medicare Advantage and Part D plans on a 5-star scale. CMS gives a special enrollment opportunity to switch to top-rated plans:
- Once per calendar year, you can switch to a 5-star Medicare Advantage or Part D plan in your service area.
- Window: December 8 to November 30 of the following year.
- Catch: 5-star plans are rare. Most service areas have 0-2 5-star options.
Other Medicare Advantage SEPs
Specific life events trigger a Special Enrollment Period to switch or disenroll:
- Moving out of your plan's service area
- Losing employer coverage
- Qualifying for Medicaid or Extra Help
- Plan terminated or substantially changed
- Being misled or harmed by your current plan
- Returning from incarceration
- 5-star plan SEP as described above
Medigap underwriting — the trap when leaving MA
If you disenroll from Medicare Advantage and want a Medigap plan to fill out Original Medicare, here's the catch:
Most states allow Medigap medical underwriting outside your one-time 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment window. That means carriers can:
- Refuse to sell you any Medigap plan based on health conditions
- Charge you significantly more (often 50-200% of standard premium)
- Exclude pre-existing conditions for up to 6 months
Exception: Some MA "trial right" rules guarantee Medigap acceptance if you joined MA when first eligible for Medicare and want to switch back within the first 12 months. A handful of states (NY, CT, MA, ME, VT, WA, OR, MO) offer additional Medigap protections.
Before disenrolling from MA, get a Medigap underwriting quote first. Don't assume you can get the Medigap plan you want.
